An Excellent Astringent for Acne-Infested Skin

Acne is such a bane that anyone affected by the problem longs for a medicinal marvel that can clear their spotty skin. Perhaps, you too are looking for something that can be simply dabbed on your face to banish those menacing blemishes! Natural acne treatment is the norm today, as evident from the universal hype it has created. To this end, a lot of study has been done about natural astringents, i.e. substances that tone your skin by tightening your skin tissues. As you peruse through this article, you'll discover how the astringent properties of Witch Hazel can rejuvenate your acne-infested skin.

Astringents play a crucial role in the cosmetic world, mainly because they tone and firm the skin. External application of astringents constricts your skin pores and even coagulates skin proteins to provide a shielding layer of tissues. Did you know that aftershave lotions contain astringents to alleviate pain and irritation resulting from minor cuts? Apart from cosmetic uses, these substances are used medicinally for constriction of the mucous membrane to check unnecessary secretions. Witch Hazel astringent is actually the distillate derived from the bark and leaves of a shrub by the same name. Its astringent properties are attributed to the presence of tannin. Besides, it has disinfectant, deep-cleansing, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, all of which discourage acne. Another plus is its anti-irritant property, which soothes skin irritation and hinders the progress of further infection. This is because it helps maintain the pH balance of your skin.

How is Witch Hazel used? You may use it as a toner or as a mask in combination with other products. For example, you may prepare a concoction of Witch Hazel and rubbing-alcohol and dab the mixture on your face to shrink pimples and tighten the pores. Alternatively, you may combine Witch Hazel with calamine; the former does the toning and shrinking jobs, while the latter removes excessive skin oil. Or, you may simply use Witch Hazel distillate as a deep cleanser to wipe dirt, makeup or excessive oil. Cleaning thus at the end of the day will definitely tone your skin.

Why not try a face mask made from this astringent? Mix clay and Witch Hazel in equal proportions and apply the mixture on your skin. Leave for about ten minutes and wipe away with a warm cloth. The purpose of the clay is to draw out oil that clogs your pores. You may also mix a teaspoon of Witch Hazel with two tablespoons of honey and about two drops of lavender oil to prepare a mask. Honey has antibacterial properties, while lavender oil has antiseptic and analgesic properties. This mask is an excellent natural remedy to balance your skin, thereby reducing zits and pimples.

To summarize, Witch Hazel offers an affordable and effective home remedy for acne. As astringents repress the skin oil, the root cause of acne is attacked. We all know that oily skin harbors bacteria within plugged follicles, which become inflammatory and manifest as acne. Most acne products come with chemical astringents, such as benzoyl peroxide and acetone and they are effective as well. But, isn't it in your best interest to try natural remedies for acne as they are relatively safer, cheaper and more effective?

What Is Acne and What Causes Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles of the skin become clogged with oil, resulting in pimples. Acne is usually found on the face, back and chest. Acne usually begins around puberty, and worsens during the teenage years. The hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance that is known as sebum. Sebum is used to lubricate the hair and the skin. When the body produces excess amounts of sebum, usually during puberty and adolescence, the hair follicles become clogged, which causes inflammation of the skin and can cause acne. The face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and arms have the sebaceous glands, which is why acne is the most common in these areas. Lets take a look at what plays a significant role in causing acne:

1) Diet: For years, scientists have claimed that acne and diet are not related to each other. However, recently there is evidence that says that diet can play a role in acne. New studies show that foods with a high glycemic index cause acne. These foods include; cakes, cookies, sodas, breads, etc. Eating these foods causes the body to release a hormone known as insulin to regulate that blood sugar. Once the blood sugar then drops, the body releases another hormone to raise the blood sugar back to the normal level. Some scientists say that all the extra hormone production can be the cause of acne. Dairy products are also said to produce acne, due to the hormones in the milk. To sum this up, diet does play a role in acne. To control acne, eat a low amount of sugars and greasy foods, and eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible.

2) Puberty: During puberty, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum. Sebum is an oil that moisturizers the hair and skin. The excess sebum combines with dead skin cells and clogs up the pores, resulting in acne breakouts. This is also true with women who are on their period or are pregnant. The sebaceous glands will continue to produce excessive sebum until around the age of 20. To control acne, teenagers should promote good hygiene and wash their face at least twice a day.

3) Stress: Many overlook how big of a factor stress plays in the cause of acne. When stressed, stress hormones raise testosterone levels, causing production of oil and causing breakouts. I remember when I came home from college after finals week. The first thing my Mom said to me was "Oh my God, your face looks horrible!" To control acne, try to remain calm, be sure to relax, and get enough sleep daily.

4) Hygiene: Showering and washing your face are the best ways to control acne. Dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria all accumulate on your skin and cause acne. Also, keep your hands away from your face! To control acne, wash your face at least twice a day and promote good hygiene.

Treatment Options To Remove Acne Scars

Appearance of acne scars can make you self-conscious and worried about the look of your face. While most usually disappear with time, some can be permanent and treatment options may not help remove the scars. Acne scars take different forms and can be macules, tissue scars, skin discoloration and loss of tissue. The most common are macules which manifest as lesions and flat red spot where the acne was once located. Skin discoloration happens all the time and is referred to as post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation which eventually disappears even if it will take months. The include:

Chemical peels - Chemical peel as a method to remove acne scars uses chemicals which are essentially made from acids to remove the outer layers of the skin. Peeling may continue afterwards depending on the strength of the acid used. The effect of the chemical used is to destroy the cell that are scarred improving the appearance of the skin around the scars and the post inflammatory hyper pigmentation that occur on the cells that had acne or the lesion around it. Though the resultant skin may be even and smooth, this method of scar removal may have disastrous side effects on certain skin types.

Dermabrasion - This treatment method to remove acne scars will require weeks and several days for healing process. The skin is resurfaced using high-speed instrument or brushes which essentially reduce the depth of the scars. Dermabrasion as a treatment method to remove scars is very effective and is preferred by most doctors and patients alike.

Micro-dermabrasion - This is a modification of dermabrasion and preferred for removal of acne scars in patients who in one way or another will take abnormally longer period to heal. A pray of super fine crystal are employed instead of the more intensive high speed brushes. No downtimes are involved as the process can be repeated several times. It is still as effective as the general dermabrasion method though.

Fillers - Fillers are technically not a treatment method to remove acne scars. When the appearance of scars leads to depressed appearance of the skin, hyaluronic acid, fat, collagen or other fillers are used to fill the depressed gaps on the skin. The skin will absorb the substances and depending on the intensity with which acne affected your skin, the filler injections are repeated monthly or after given number of weeks.

Lasers - The use of lasers to remove acne scars is one of the latest, fastest and most efficient methods but which still has fears. Depending on whether the acne scars are flat or raised different kinds of lasers may be used, laser surgery takes long time to heal just like dermabrasion treatment method to remove scars. Lasers can lighten up the skin, flatten and smoothen the areas of the skin that are contoured, remove the dead outer layer of the skin and kill the cells that are prone to acne on the areas of the skin with lesions.

Dealing With Acne: How To Do It?

Dealing With Acne: How To Do It? - If you're reading this then you probably have some problems in how to deal with acne. First and foremost, it is not the food that causes the zits - in most cases. Acne normally arises when your skin pores get clogged up by dead skin cells or oil from oil-based cosmetics and/or facial lotions. It can also be because your skin-type is oily. Oily skin also has its benefits such as a younger look and it feels great too.

However, if your acne is bothering you that much that you really need to improve on it, then I have some tips here for you to deal with it.
Nowadays there are so many causes of- and treatments for acne that is hard to understand and pinpoint what exactly is the real cause for it, because every person is different and reacts different on cures and treatments.

Omega-3 and Acne
It is believed by some scientist that Omega-3 will help you get rid of Acne, however they have not been able to prove a direct link. The scientist I am talking about has done research wherein they have studied five people with acne, from the age of 18 to the age of 23. They gave these sufferers of acne a supplement which contained a dose of Omega-3s. They have been following the five sufferers for over a period of two months, and noted a significant decrease in the acne that they were suffering.

At the beginning of this paragraph I wrote '' not able to provide a direct link " because these scientist also consider the fact that this could have been due to a placebo-effect.

Antibiotics and Acne
Products buyable without a prescription, such as Clearasil or -name your pick here- prove adequate enough for most people to control their acne. This is however generally a short-term strategy, and in the long-term these products end up being useless and a waste of your time, effort and money. If you really are in need of help you should visit your dermatologist who can give you more accurate info, but don't take everything dermatologists say for a fact, either. As I said, there are so many causes of- and treatments for acne that you just have to try to find what works for you and in some cases a dermatologist will not be able to give you the answers you are looking for. Acne medications tend to affect people differently on skin type, classification and severity. To get a good result for your treatment you should wait at least up to 4 to 6 weeks to see if there is any improvement before switching to a different method (imho, you should wait longer, but that is really up to you). Patience is a virtue when combatting acne.

Here are some more tips for you to help you prevent or reduce acne, use these tips at your own risk - and with some research, of course!

Look for products labeled "non-comedogenic". What this means, is that the product is water-based and thus not oil-based. This can help reducing the clogging of your pores.

Wash your face twice a-day with warm water, to clear dead skin cells.
If you do any sport-activities that involves wearing a hat or anything else that you put on your head, wash it before your wear it each time! This also includes a headband.

Drink water, don't overdo it, but make sure you get enough every day. It depends on the person how much water you need. Water helps your digestive tract moving and ensures that your skin is not burdened by wastes that your bodily system can't handle.

Get enough nutrients for your skin, this means keep it cool on the fat and sugar. I know I said that Acne has nothing to do with your diet, but eating healthier means you will feel better and feeling better gives you less stress and less stress, in turn, means less acne!

Got Allergy? Some food allergies cause acne, some things that most people tend to eat are things such as dairy products. Try and do a test for allergies - you might find out something you didn't know before.
Dirty skin is the creator of acne in many cases, so try and avoid dirty environments. Clean your bed-sheets once a week and keep your room clean.

Did you think the sun is good for your skin? Well, it's not, the sun serves for masking your acne temporarily it has no added benefits. Get some sun, but don't overdo it and definitely don't do it just to get rid of your acne.

Remember, patience is a virtue when combatting acne.

Curing Acne By Adopting a New Diet

Curing Acne By Adopting a New Diet - Some experts say that there are some acne diets that work without having to use complete treatments and creams. The truth is that healthy eating does promote better metabolism and the release of antioxidants, so you can benefit from better looks, digestion and a clearer skin. There are some do-s and don't-s when it comes to planning a new diet to cure acne. Find out what you should avoid and which types of food you need to replace in order to get rid of those annoying pimples.

Oily Foods and Acne
Oily foods and processed meat products can increase the appearance of pimples, as people's body will struggle to flush out excess fat. Without providing enough support, the metabolism will slow down and the skin's defense system will weaken. A weaker immune system will not be able to fight with acne breakouts. Therefore, you should always make sure that protein gets into your body in the rawest possible format. Sausages and burgers should be avoided, and if you really need to use oil replace it with Virgin Olive Oil. Steaming instead of frying and oven chips are good for an acne diet.

Curing Acne through Raw Diet
You can support your skin's own defense system and cure acne with a raw diet. Vitamins and antioxidants getting into your system will increase the working of your immune system and help you get rid of all the things and substances built up you no longer need. Vitamins B, C and D are best taken in a natural format. Even if you only have one raw diet day a week, you will see that your skin gets clearer and brighter.

Curing Acne by Reducing Sugar
Less sugar means a clearer skin in many cases. As sugar can change the level of hormones in the body, it can cause hormonal acne. In some cases, it is enough to reduce or control the sugar intake, but if the problem is associated with puberty or ovary or thyroid disorder, there is a need to see a specialist to normalize the level of endocrine and estrogen in the body through medication before a real acne treatment can be started.

Natural Antioxidants in the New Diet to Fight Acne
Antioxidants can be found in many types of food, not only raw fruit and vegetables. Although nuts have loads of helpful antioxidants, people with acne should avoid them as they also contain pimple-triggering oil. Cooked russet potato and beans can also deliver the vitamins and minerals the body needs to fight the breakout of pimples.
